Maro Lamberg

Maro Lamberg (they/them) is a sculpture, installation and performance artist and PhD candidate in the Binational Artistic PhD Program at HfK Bremen (University of the Arts Bremen) in cooperation with the School for Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada.

In their artistic and research-based work Lamberg focuses on the exploration of the human body and spaces through movement. How can artistic interventions serve as catalysts for differentiated experiences? In times of a drastic societal shift to the political right and ongoing restrictions on physical self-determination, it becomes essential to ask about the conditions for diversity of human experiences with and through body and space. How can norms and conditions of experiences be reshaped? Here, the found everyday environment often serves as a foundation for the artistic process.

Lamberg studied at the Kunsthochschule Kassel (Germany), the Faculty of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria (Canada) and the Faculdade de Belas Artes at the University of Lisbon (Portugal). In 2022, they graduated with distinction from the Kunsthochschule Kassel. From 2023 to 2024, they were Meisterschüler*in of Prof. Florian Slotawa.

MARO LAMBERG, since 2026, "POWER WALKS"

Participatory Performance

In the ongoing performance series Power Walks, high-voltage power lines become scores for movements beyond familiar, “walkable” infrastructures. The attempt to follow the course of the power lines as precisely as possible through walking breaks with habitual patterns of movement and opens up an altered perception of landscape and the lived body.

The movement through space is recorded via GPS, leaving behind a two-dimensional drawing that persists beyond the ephemerality of walking. Through its deviations from the course of the power lines, it makes visible the limits of movement taking place outside infrastructures designed for human passage. A “queer” interpretation of the movement score emerges.

MARO LAMBERG, 2026, "DEAD LINES"

3.4 x 3.0 x 2.0m

Networks of infrastructure often remain invisible, they can fail or become “lost.” The gallery space at the HBK Saarbrücken is crisscrossed by cables and conduits that exist only fragmentarily in the plans. Even with the help of a cable detector, large sections of the electrical infrastructure can no longer be located, as cavities in the walls and floor not only render it visually invisible but literally swallow it up.

These gaps stand in contrast to the supposedly concrete infrastructure that surrounds us and to the specific forms of guidance imposed by architecture. Dead Lines seeks to reverse this relationship: a section of an electrical cable marked on the wiring plan but no longer traceable is brought “back” into the space, where it itself assumes a function of directing movement through the architectural environment. Mirroring the absent rhythm of the alternating current that should actually be flowing here, conductive aluminum rods are stacked in a regular rhythm - initially along the wall, before tipping out into the space.

Maro Lamberg, 2024, "Futtermittelverladestation"

33.0 x 8.0 x 5.8m

This thread installation was created on the abandoned site of the former Muskator animal feed plant for the ibug 24 (International Festival for Urban Art). The work questions the interface between function and aesthetics. The remnants of the industrial architecture, that was designed for pure functionality, form the basis for the aesthetic exploration of the space. The threads guide viewers along new paths across the Futtermittelverladestation (i.e., feed loading station).

Maro Lamberg, 2024, "Portal"

15.5 x 9.0 x 7.5m (diagonal: 19.5m)

This site-specific installation of elastic threads addresses questions about both the directions of view and the directions of movement in the documenta Halle in Kassel. Architectural structures are made (in)visible by changing one´s own position, and illusions of spatial depth are created.

Maro Lamberg, 2024, "Papaya im Projektraum"

9.0 x 6.0 x 4.5m

How do we move through spaces?

The site-specific installation Papaya in the Project Space explores the geometric spatial patterns of the project space of the Kunsthochschule Kassel by deconstructing the shape of the staircase and transferring its individual surfaces into the space. This restructures the space and, similar to the staircase itself, guides movement in and through the space.

Maro Lamberg, 2022, "____________bridge"

35.0 x 9.0 x 8.0m

The work ____________bridge investigates questions of volume, density and transparency that can only be experienced by changing the viewer's position beneath this site-specific installation, consisting of 11 kilometers of transparent nylon monofilament. The work at the documenta Halle Kassel is the artistic result of a practical as well as theoretical examination of bridges that can not only be understood as a connecting link or as part of the “in-between”: by bridging a boundary or threshold, the immersive work enables a changed perception of the space. By one's own movement through the gallery the initial indistinct flickering in the air slowly fades and shifts into sharp light-reflecting surfaces.
