Christian Rosales Fonseca

Christian Rosales Fonseca is a composer, improviser, performer and electric guitar player born in Bogotá, Colombia. He studied composition with Prof. Jörg Birkenkötter and electroacustical composition with Prof. Kilian Schwoon at the University of Arts Bremen. After finishing his Master's degree he started his Meisterschüler studies with Prof. Markus Löffler and Prof. Andree Korpys. In his work, he integrates political and social issues from recent Colombian history and examines them from a postcolonial perspective. His music reflects transcultural musical influences from Europe and Latin America, yet he avoids taking an exoticising view. Using fragments of recordings made by ethnologist Konrad Theodor Preuss in Colombia at the beginning of the 20th century, the duo INCOMODO uses free improvisation and different instruments to question the colonial power structures present in these historical recordings. Through musical experimentation and reinterpretation, this performance aims to provide a better understanding of the context behind these recordings.

The piece "Una crónica de una..." consists of a quartet that is used in an unusual way. The first three instruments are not played traditionally, but are transformed into resonating bodies to which loudspeakers are attached. The sounds that emerge are recorded testimonies that describe how Germany has supported human rights violations in Colombia, not only by financing and building arms factories in the country, but also by illegally supplying weapons.

With his performance and sound installation the composer reappraises the bloody history of the civil war that has shaken his native country of Colombia to this day. One of the most horrifying systematic human rights violations was the targeted killing of civilians
by national army forces which began in 2002 and lasted for six years. In order to meet the shooting quotas demanded by those in power the civilian victims were staged as successfully defeated guerrilla fighters. One encounters the abomination, the cynicism and the outrageous hypocrisy from the confession of a high-ranking general who was significantly involved in the crimes and who only confessed eleven years later. Rosales Fonseca sets a memorial to the victims by powerfully and relentlessly projecting the confession into the museum with the help of his speaking electric guitar and the electro- acoustic music coming from the loudspeakers.

With Melissa Wedekind, Paul Zoder, Mattia Bonafini and the Bremen Loudspeaker Orchestra.
